Bio

The Carbon Dioxide Ensemble (CO2E) performs live original electronic music with interactive visuals. Members include: Thomas Lundy on Copper Heart, Victoria Lundy on Theremin and Live Electronics, and Mark Mosher on Live Synths, Sampling, and Visuals.
Tom articulates the Copper Heart with dry ice, creating acoustic metallic textures. Using live real-time FX, sampling, and synthesis, Mark sculpts the Copper Heart into a cinematic electronic soundscape where the acoustic material becomes evolving rhythmic patterns and melodic arcs, all with Victoria’s Theremin accompaniment.
Each show is unique and takes the audience through a journey of movements from sound collage, to Theremin interludes, to beat-driven electronica. Throughout the performance, immersive visuals with live camera input and real-time visual FX transform dynamically, moving in synchronization with the live musical arrangement.
Inspired by both 1950s sci-fi films like Forbidden Planet, with Bebe and Louis Barron’s ground-breaking electronic tonalities, and Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète, CO2E have been performing in the Denver scene since 2014. Some performance highlights include playing the opening concerts for Scream Screen’s Halloween events at the SIE FilmCenter and a sold-out performance for the opening of the film Phantasm screened at Feldman Mortuary. They also opened for the Denver International Noise Fest, performed a live multimedia performance with filmmaker Taylor Dunne, performed in the long-running Concréte Mixer concert series at the Walnut Room, and played a music convocation at Gates Concert Hall for the Lamont School of Music at DU.
CO2E is also known for standing-room-only multimedia performances at the Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival (LEAF) featuring “deconstruction/reconstruction” of early cinema. While honoring the intent of the original filmmakers, they resynthesized Edison’s 1910 Frankenstein, and later Georges Méliès’ legendary 1902 A Trip to the Moon, which they converted to Anaglyph 3D. Both were presented with immersive visuals, lights, and a live score.

University of Denver Music Convocation

Some of Denver’s Most Challenging Music Finds a New Audience at DU…
DU is certainly no stranger to experimental music on campus, but it is certainly rare for this sort of performance to happen at a university in general…
Westword Magazine
Perhaps out of this performance, a new crop of adventurous musicians will take root in Denver or at least a greater awareness of the existence of an experimental scene in Denver spread to people who might be completely ignorant of it.
History
The Carbon Dioxide Ensemble descends from Denver’s Carbon Dioxide Orchestra, a group that performed in the 1990s and early 2000s. An earlier incarnation of the CO2 Orchestra performed in the 1980s.
The Copper Heart was built and played by William Valdez. The Orchestra had a changing membership that at various times included David Dickson, Leroy Jaramillo, Victoria Lundy, Eduardo Mendez, Jason Mieger, and Bruce Nickerson.
